Last Minute Holiday Fun - A Theatre Outing!
December 05, 2008
I still own a very worn copy of The Velveteen Rabbit and love to look at it from time to time and wonder when my son will be patient enough for me to read it to him. For the rest of you (with older kids) and those of you sporting enough to take a toddler to a theatre performance, you still have a chance to see it live on stage! Weekend shows at 1pm and 4pm Saturday, 2pm Sunday. Read more...

December 04, 2008
Tired of your same old books? Looking for something new to you and them? Try out one of these...they are sure to be a hit. Touch & Feel Fire Engine We have a few of the "Touch and Feel" series books, and they are all big hits, even 1 years after first purchase. This one is sure to be a hit with toddler and preschoolers who are obsessed with all 'things that go!' I love that these Read more...
Why I Love Our Routines
December 03, 2008
Like they're talking about over on the National Being Savvy Blog , preschoolers LOVE routines. And so do I. You may be routine and schedule averse. I know I was before becoming a Mom. But if you look closely, you will find many, many natural routines in your day. What do you do when you wake up? Likely the same exact sequence of events every day (save a sick child or other surprise). Read more...
World of Snacks: Think Global and Local
November 25, 2008
"When I wake up I smell biscuits..." or "I see take-out tekka maki..." when I start these books, I can recite them in their entirety (almost!) just by memory. Like a good Dr. Seuss book, the world of snacks are catchy and colorful. What's so great about them is that they introduce your toddler -- and later your preschooler -- to a wonderful world of global cuisine (instead of green eggs and Read more...
Holden's 5 favorites
November 24, 2008
When it comes to reading kids' books, there are some that I love that my son doesn't care for and there are those he loves that I could do without. T Here are some books we love in our house (a mix of both kinds) along with my Savvy Source reviews of them. Click around the Books, toys, and more area to find other great books with parent reviews. Then add your own. How Do Dinosaurs Say Read more...
Books that read themselves
November 19, 2008
As mentioned before, I like snuggling up with a cute kid and a good book, but there is also something wonderful about said cute kid curling up on his own and staying busy while not just zoning out in front of the TV. Enter the "reading robot." LeapFrog's Tag toy is a magic wand chunky pen that reads words, plays games, and makes sound effects. And it's never too lazy or tired to give the Read more...
Books that make us laugh
November 18, 2008
We love books in this house. Even Scarlett will sit and read to herself or bring book after book to any adult who is paying attention. Some funny favorites that everyone should know about are: If You Give a Pig A Pancake - this one, and all it's sequels and prequels, might be funniest to the parent who knows that toddlers operate much in the way that the demanding animals in this book do. Find your favorite reading nook
November 11, 2008
My current favorite places to read and hear stories are the yellow chair in the living room and the white chair in the kids' room. Just last week, I asked Holden to tell me a story and he weaved this beautifully ridiculous story beginning with "Once upon a time" and ending with him (or the character "Holden" -- we can't be sure) giving the girl lots of hugs because she was very sad. But just Read more...
Sidewalks, scaffolding, and tar -- oh my!
October 16, 2008
As I mentioned before, the construction of the new Berkeley Bowl is a sight (and site!) to behold. We bike or walk by it (or ok, when we're lazy -- we drive!) every day. And we watch the progress. This past week we noticed that the block smells strongly of chocolate until right in front of the construction -- then it smells like tar -- and goes back to smelling like chocolate until we cross San Read more...
Blue Sky Family Club: with coupon!
October 10, 2008
The Blue Sky Family Club is your healthy alternative to Chucky Cheese. Or it's your new rainy day go-to spot. Tucked away in the Emeryville Public Market, there is a playhouse with dress-up costumes, a small climbing structure, vast art area (4 tables with different projects going), climbing wall for big kids, and a changeable area with big mats, balls, and zooming little cars. And did I Read more...
Reading aloud: Oldies but goodies are a hit!
July 15, 2008
My son's preschool is across the street from a public library, so we often go there after school to pick out a few books. We see other preschool parents there, which is nice because we can exchange recommendations. It was there that we discovered the Where's Waldo series which became an intense passion for about 6 weeks. The next fantastic find was brought to us by Adeline's mom. The Frog Read more...
Book nooks: North Berkeley Library
May 22, 2008
My son has been going to storytime at the North Berkeley library every week since he was 5 months old. His nanny took him to Baby and Toddler Time (Monday mornings at 10:15) and reported back that he was mezmorized and sat absolutely still -- admittedly no big deal for a 5 month old, but this continued well into his second year. I was happy to learn when he started preschool at age 2 that his Read more...
