How to cultivate the tiniest green thumb in Berkeley

May 15, 2008

How lucky are we to live in Alice Waters' backyard? Literally.

A bunch of my mama friends were telling me about their trips to the Edible Schoolyard and I can't wait to try it. The community garden project is an off-shoot of the middle school enriching classroom work with experience both the garden and the kitchen. Thus, the only trick is to go during non-school hours (after school, weekends, summer break are all fine), and then just enjoy the experience of seeing plants and chasing chickens.

Founded by Waters to celebrate the transformative power of growing, cooking, and sharing food, it is a colorful, lively place to cultivate a love of gardening. Little painted signs explain what is what. You can't eat what you find in the garden, so Karyn and Naomi told me that they either pack a picnic lunch to eat on the hay bales or bring the lunch down the hill to Hopkins Park and let the kids run around until naptime.
